The vehicle went into the water at Carrowmoreknock Ferry Pier, Lough Corrib around 8:30pm this evening.

Gardai, the fire brigade, two ambulances and the coast guard were all at the scene.

A garda spokesman said: “Shortly after 8.20pm on the 31st December 2016 Gardaí in Salthill received a cal that a car had gone into Lough Corrib at Knockferry.

“A male (67 years) deceased was recovered from the water, he is still at the scene awaiting transfer to the Morgue at University College Hospital Galway.
