Clamping down – New laws will see car clamping fees capped at €100 in order to eliminate spiraling fees

There will be changes to the car clamping system that will see charges capped at €100 from October 1st this year.

Under the new laws council or private clampers will not be allowed to charge more than €100 to vehicle owners.

The new laws which will be part of a new legislation that was submitted back in 2015 come after a number of disgruntled motorists have complained about the extraordinary fees being imposed by private companies over the past number of years.

Although local city and town councils charge in the region of €85 to remove the clamp from a vehicle, private companies have been heavily criticised as many motorists have faced fines between €120-€200.

Announcing the new cap the Transport Minister Mr Shane Ross said a period of public consultation would be held followed by the scheme being operational by October 1st.
