Cyclists could soon receive on the spot fines if they are caught not wearing high visibility clothing under new Garda proposals

Cyclists who are caught riding their bycycle without wearing high visibility clothing soon receive a fixed penalty in the near future if a latest motion is submitted by Gardai is excepted.

The new law which would require cyclists having to wear high visibility clothing and helmets was discussed at recent a meeting of Garda delegates in Dublin.

Under the new proposals Gardai say they want to make the roads a safer place to be and that cyclists as well as motorists should be given new road safety guidelines to adhere to.

Speaking about the latest proposal Servant Claire Healy said: “The amount of fatalities and serious injuries – even minor injuries in cyclists, especially in the DMR [Dublin Metropolitan Region] is huge so we’d just like shift the mentality and attitudes of cyclists to encompass their own safety and take that on board.”

“I mean, I’d rather have the protection. You wouldn’t send your child out on a bike without a helmet so why not have the same protection yourself?”

“I mean we’ve all walked around the city centre, cycled around the city centre, drove around, you see people stepping out, trucks taking corners short. So you need to protect yourself. And fluorescent jackets and helmets are absolutely the way to go in my personal opinion.”
