Good news for students hoping to travel to the US next summer as the Department of Foreign Affairs confirms there will be 7,000 J1 work visa’s available in 2018

Students who hoping to travel to the US next summer were given a welcome boost this week as the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that over 7,000 work visa’s will be made available in 2018.

The news which will be welcomed by many young Irish people comes after the US and Irish Government’s agreed a deal to extend the programme which has ran for over 50 years.

It is expected there visas will be made available to all students who have secured work placement next May/June.

Under the current programme rules students who wish to spend their summer in the US just gain employment from a recognised employer and spend no more than four months in the country whilst on the visa.

The programme has been a roaring success over the past 50 years with over 160,000 students availing of the scheme since it began.
