Housing crisis for college students set to worsen

The accommodation crisis for college students is getting worse, as the new semester looms in the horizon.

Collegecribs.ie, a website that features property listings for third-level colleges, has reported a surge in traffic of almost 25pc in comparison to the same time last year. And according to the site, the biggest hike in accommodation cost has happened in Dublin, with over 5pc increase on last year’s prices.

While Dublin ranks the worst in terms of student accommodation shortage, it is also becoming increasingly difficult to find a place to live in Galway and Cork.

A new initiative by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) will see a campaign launched in Dublin appealing for home owners to consider renting a spare room to a student.
