Two hundred and twenty two fatalities have been confirmed after a tsunami struck without warning in the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra overnight. At least 745 people suffered injuries in the disaster.
The tsunami is believed to have been caused by the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano. Giant waves struck inland, destroying buildings along the shoreline and causing significant damage to a number of near-beach hotels.
Rescue efforts to find survivors are now underway.
