Investigation continues after 5,000 fish die in Cork river

At least 5,000 fish have died in a significant fish kill that is being looked at on a river in County Cork that is environmentally sensitive, reports RTE.

The State organisation in charge of safeguarding and conserving freshwater fish and their habitats, Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), is carrying out the inquiry.

The pollution event happened in the north of the county, close to Freemount, in an area designated as a Special Area of Conservation. The river in question is the River Allow, a tributary of the Munster Blackwater watershed, reports RTE.

Uisce Éireann, which operates a water treatment facility in Freemount, has stated that it is looking into a leak that was allegedly caused there.

The goal of IFI officers’ work is to ascertain the extent of the fish death, reports RTE.
