“I will play no more”: Ireland great Kevin Doyle officially announces his retirement from football following medical advice

It has been confirmed that Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle has officially retired from football following medical advice.

The Wexford native who had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Reading, officially announced his retirement via twitter on Thursday evening.

Doyle who currently resides in the US where he played for the Colorado Rapids, said he was forced to hang up his boots due to “repeated headaches”.

In the detailed post the former Cork City striker said the following: “I will play no further part this season and will be retiring.”

“This year it has been clear to me that heading the ball was becoming problematic and causing me to have repeated headaches.”

“Two concussions this season and numerous others over the years have made this more concerning.”

Doyle ends his career after earning 64 caps and scoring 14 goals for his country, his last appearance for Ireland was in their 1-0 defeat to Iceland last March.
