Leading Fine Gael senator calls for the introduction of driverless vehicles in order to help rural pubs

A leading Fine Gael senator has reportedly approached the Seanad about the possibility of asking the Government to strongly consider a proposal that would see the introduction of driverless cars in rural regions.

The senator who has submitted the proposal Fine Gael’s Paddy Burke believes the introduction of such vehicles could actively help rejuvenate local communities.

Mr Burke has said such a scheme would most likely be beneficial to publicans as the vehicles would cut out the risk of drink driving for many customers.

Mr Burke told Seanad the idea must be seriously considered and that the government should prepare for the future of transport.

Mr Burke said: “To be honest I think that it will be a welcome addition to the rural areas because it may be one of the only things that might revitalise the rural pubs.”
