Two students who survived a balcony collapse in Berkeley in California are thankfully expected to make a full recovery the Minister of State for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan has said.

The two students Conor Flynn and Jack Halpinare fortunately survived the tragic incident which happened on Monday night but were severely injured after the balcony collapsed killing six of their friends.

Mr Deenihan announced the news whilst speaking at a press conference in Berkeley last night, Deenihan told the american media: “I’d like to thank the John Muir medical centre for the way they have looked after both Conor Flynn and Jack Halpin – both of them were very fortunate to get the medical treatment that they got here and it seems certain now that they’re going to have – and make a full recovery.

Mr Deenihan also was full of praise and gratitude to the doctors and the medical staff who attended to the injured saying: ā€œI was very encouraged with the spirit that I saw there.”

Dennihan went onto say: ā€œConor was very positive and it helped, no doubt that four of his friends were with him; one of them coming from Chicago, another from San Diego.Ā ā€œThatā€™s an expression of support that these young people have for each other.ā€Ā “But also his determination to make a full recovery that was really inspirational.

Mr Deenihan finished his statement by saying: “Also his concern for the people that are injured and his hope that they would all make a full recovery as well, that was his hope. Of course, his sorrow for his lost friends as well.”

Meanwhile hundreds of students attended a service held yesterday at UCD for those tragically killed in the incident. The GAA have also announced thatĀ minutes silence will be observed at all its GAA matches being this weekend to honor the memory of those who died in the tragedy.
