US President Donald Trump has said that he will now begin to cut aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador after the Central American nations failed to halt a caravan of migrants headed towards the US border.
Reuters reported that the American president had warned that unless the 7,000 migrants were stopped, US aid to their countries of origin would be slashed or cut off all together and the military will close the border.
Mexican police and military attempted to stop the caravan entering their country en route to the US. However, after running battles with the migrants that left several police injured, the caravan continued on its journey north.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that this caravan is an organised effort to undermine the sovereignty of Mexico and the US.
Meanwhile President Trump also announced that he has alerted the US border patrol and the military that the caravan, which he said contains hardened criminals, represent a national emergency.
