Repeal of the 8th Amendment will lead to abortion on demand as Minister for Health Simon Harris fails to defend unborn babies

Speaking on “The Week in Politics” programme, Minister for Health Simon Harris tried and failed to defend his plans to introduce abortion.

The Pro Life Campaign have said that voting for repeal of the 8th Amendment would be handing a “blank cheque” to politicians who could then introduce any kind of abortion in the future without ever having to go back to the public again.

This could leave us in a situation like Canada, where there are no restrictions on abortion at all. This becomes all the more frightening when you remember that a baby’s heart is beating at just 3 weeks in the womb. Minister Simon Harris had nothing to say about why these babies shouldn’t get the same legal protection as everyone else.

The abortion debate is just starting. Different things will be said on lots of different programmes, but one thing won’t change. A vote for repeal is a blank cheque, handed over to politicians who can then go ahead and introduce abortion on demand. The only way to stop that is to vote to save the 8th Amendment when the referendum comes around.
