Italian and Greek emergency services continued working in dreadful conditions throughout the night to rescue the hundreds of passengers still on board of the burning ‘Norman Atlantic’ ferry.
The vessel caught fire yesterday morning off the Albanian coast. The blaze is said to have started in the ferry’s vehicle deck, but it remains unclear at this point what caused the fire.
One person has so far been confirmed dead, and up to 200 passengers remained trapped aboard the ship as of 6am this morning.
Horrendous weather conditions have been hindering the rescue efforts, with gale force winds and 6ft waves battering the ship as it drifts.
