The perpetrator of yesterday’s massacre inside a Baptist church in Texas died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to preliminary reports.

The shooter, identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, entered the Baptist church in the small Texan town of Sutherland Springs in full combat gear and began shooting. Kelley killed 26 people and injured many more during the rampage.

The shooter was engaged by other armed citizens, and a brief shootout ensued. He fled by car, with citizens in pursuit. His car crashed into a ditch, and Kelley was found dead inside the vehicle a short time later.

It is understood that Kelley had served in the US Air Force and had been dishonorably discharged after a court martial that arose from domestic disturbances at his home.

It is not known why Kelley targeted the church, as he had no affiliation to it.
