The teenager who drowned in Kildare yesterday evening has been named as Oisin Quigley.
The 13-year-old entered the Lyreen River beside the Kilcock Road in Maynooth to rescue one of his friends before getting into difficulty himself.
Two other teenagers have received hospital treatment after the incident.
Maynooth Post Primary School has issued a statement expressing deep sadness at the loss of Oisin Quigley. The school has expressed their sympathy to the Quigley family and friends and the other students involved in the incident.
Naoise ĆāCearĆŗil, Fianna FĆ”il councillor in Maynooth, and chair of the Board of Maynooth Community College, which is connected to the post primary schoolĀ has said the community is in shock.
“We are in extreme sense of shock and I suppose even on a bright sunny day like today, you can feel I suppose, the downtroddenness of the community in such a tragic accident.ā
