Uber has halted its self-driving car testing program indefinitely, after one of the vehicles being tested hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday.
The vehicle was reportedly carrying a human operator but had been set to autonomous driving mode at the time of the incident.
It is understood that the pedestrian, a female, was crossing the road at a point outside a crosswalk when she was hit. She died later in hospital.
Uber has now halted testing of self-driving vehicles, pending further investigation.
Self-driving cars are been hailed as the future of motor vehicles as they are meant to obey all existing traffic laws, but current technology struggles with random factors of human unpredictability.
