Storm Hector lashed the country with winds of up to 125km/h overnight, bringing heavy rain in places.
Up to 35,000 people remain without power this morning in the wake of the damage inflicted by the storm.
Winds will begin to ease towards late afternoon, giving way to an unsettled pattern of sunshine and showers.
