Indefinite suspension? Water charges could be gone for sometime as Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin reveals that a number of Dail TD’s will not vote to bring them back

The much hated issue of Water charges could soon be gone for sometime according to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin.

The charges which have been the subject of a debate that has lasted almost two years will be suspended for nine months, and the Fianna Fail leader believes the suspension could go on even further as many in the Dáil will not vote to bring them back.

Mr Martin comments will be welcome to many across the country who have opposed the charges since they were introduced. Mr Martin also says the subject could be gone for a long time given the fact that there are 90 members in the Dáil that openly oppose the water charges.

Mr Martin told RTE that the charges now seem unlikely to return and the the subject of water charges was Fine Gael’s ‘e-voting machines’ issue multiplied by ten. The Fianna Fail leader also rejected claims that he and his party’s opposition of water charges was nothing more than rank populism.

However even though he is happy with the charges suspension, Mr Martin reiterated his previous comments and said those who have not paid water charges to date should do so, and uphold the law of the land.
