Weight off their shoulders: India bans heavy schoolbags and homework in order to prevent spinal damage in children

The Indian Government has put a banned homework and introduced a schoolbag weight limit at schools across the country in an attempt to prevent spinal damage amongst young children.

Under the new system schools across the country have been given guidelines which limits the weight of a schoolbag depending on the child’s age.

It is understood the weight restrictions and homework ban comes after recent studies by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India found that 68% of young school children suffer from some form of back pain due to the weight of heavy books.

The study which involved 2,500 also found that 88% of children between the ages of 7 to 13 years of age carry roughly 45% of their body weight in their schoolbags each day.

According to reports in India, the move was encouraged as a number of children have developed hunched backs in recent years due to having almost half of their own body weight on their backs for prolonged periods of time.

The Indian Government say the guidelines have been implemented due to children in rural areas being forced to carry heavy schoolbags for a number of miles on their walk to school.
