The death of Chieftains founder and leader Paddy Moloney has been announced.
Growing up in a family of musicians in Donnycarney in North Dublin, he began playing Tin Whistle and later Uileann Pipes, learning from bagpipe master Leo Rowsome and going on to reach international fame.
He formed various groups with duet and trio musicians, and in 1962 he formed the group that became The Chieftains.
Sadly, Paddy’s death at the age of 83 was announced by his family today. Tributes from around the world have started to pour in with many saying he was up there with the best Irish musicians of all time.
