A Romanian man has received a sentence of two and a half years in prison when he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old boy.
According to the Irish Times, 32-year-old Gheorghe Rafaila assaulted the boy at a homeless centre in a Dublin hotel where both were living in 2019. It is reported that he was sitting on a bench with his wife when the little boy approached him. The child’s mother called him away when she saw Rafaila touch her son’s leg on his groin. She said that the man was laughing with his wife.
After being arrested, Rafaila apologized. It is reported that he was then asked if he thought it was alright to touch the genitals of a child, he said that “In the Roma community, this is something playful; maybe here it is not.”
When he appeared in Court, it emerged that Rafaila had been arrested in the UK and extradited to Ireland after being taken into custody. It was also said that he had a number of previous convictions from another jurisdiction and these related to theft, assault and robbery.
