Denis North, a 71-year-old man from New Ross, Co.Wexford has achieved an A1 in Leaving Certificate History.
He sat the exam at the local Vocational College. Last year Denis sat Leaving Cert Maths and has now set his sights on studying for Geography and English. Denis covered the syllabus by himself, with the odd bit of help from the local library.
Denis was more than modest when speaking about his achievements.”I don’t think too much about it to be honest,” he said. North told the Anton Savage show that he decided to return to education after being made redundant in 2007.
New Ross Vocational College principal Suzanne Barrett was full of praise, calling Denis an inspiration to the other students who sat their exams this year. She said “He worked very hard at it and we are very proud of him,” She continued,”He proves that you’re never too old to get back into education if you’re determined enough.”
