57 inmates die during violence gang clashes in Brazil prison

Gang violence has broken out at a jail in Brazil, resulting in the deaths of 57 prisoners and horrific incidents of violence involving the decapitation and smothering of a number of inmates.

According to Sky News, the fight, which broke out between two separate gangs in the prison, began during breakfast at 7am. Sections of the prison were set on fire while two prison staff were held hostage, only to be released some time later.

While it is reported that 57 prisoners have died, it is thought that this could not be the final total due to the unruly nature of the fight.
