A experimental aircraft, using only solar power has been launched from Abu Dhabi today, to attempt a pioneering journey around the world and promote green energy.
The Solar Impulse-2 craft took off from Abu Dhabi’s Al-Bateen airport at 7:12am local time. The first leg of the journey, 400km to Muscat (Oman’s capital), is expected to take around 12 hours.
The takeoff was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was delayed due to high winds.
This endeavor is the result of 13 years of research and testing by Swiss pilots Borschberg and Piccard.
