Just four days after winning his re-election bid, embattled Sepp Blatter has tendered his resignation as FIFA president.
He made the announcement at a press conference in Zurich this afternoon.
Blatter had come under steadily growing pressure in recent times, following the uncovering of a large scale corruption ring at the top echelon of the football association.
Speaking about his resignation, Blatter said: “My mandate does not appear to be supported by everybody.”
“I am very much linked to Fifa and its interests. Those interests are dear to me and this is why I am taking this decision.
“What counts most to me is the institute of Fifa and football around the world.”
