Criminal gangs are not running prisons, claims Prison Director General

According to the Director General of the Prison Service in Ireland, criminal gangs and gang members are segregated and isolated in prisons to prevent them from exercising control over other inmates.

According to RTE, Caron McCaffrey said there were 14 criminal gangs in prison with around 200 hardcore gang members and stressed that they did not control any aspect of prison life.

She said that these gang members are isolated from the general prison population.

Different gangs are held in different prisons, with a significant number of gang members in Mountjoy, other gang factions in Wheatfield, as well as many high-level gang members being held in Portlaoise maximum security prison.
