The families of nine people murdered by the British army in n west Belfast 50 years ago have been awarded significant damages, following an undisclosed settlement.

The Ballymurphy massacre took place between 9 and 11 August 1971, in which the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment of the British Army killed at least nine civilians in Ballymurphy, Belfast, as part of Operation Demetrius.

One of those killed was a teenage girl, executed while attempting to aid another unarmed man who had been gunned down and a Catholic priest was shot dead under similar circumstances.

A tenth man who was not shot died of a heart attack after thug soldiers put an empty gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

This The settlement comes as a result of civil cases brought against the Ministry of Defence for the killings the Irish Catholic reports.
