A woman has tragically died after she fell under a train in north Dublin.

The woman is believed to have tripped and fell onto the track whilst she was waiting on the platform at Raheny DART station just before 2pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail has said: “the driver put on the emergency brake but could not stop the train before it hit the woman”.

The 57 year old woman, is understood to have lived near Raheny Station, she apparently was waiting for a northbound Dart commuter train at around 1:45pm when she fell. The woman was hit by a train travelling from the city’s Pearse Street station to Drogheda service, which does not stop at Raheny. The woman was rushed to Beaumont Hospital, but later died from her injuries.

A group of Spanish students are understood to have been on the southbound platform at the time of the incident and witnessed the fall. One of the students apparently ran along the platform and tried to alert the driver of the oncoming train.

Authorities are investigating if the woman who died was visually impaired. Train services were disrupted for a time, but have now returned to normal.

Irish Rail released a statement in which they said it offered its sympathies to the victim’s family and friends for their tragic loss.
“Despite the efforts of the driver who applied the emergency brake and a young woman on the southbound platform who also alerted the driver to the incident, it was not possible to stop the train before it struck the woman,” a spokesman said.
