Motorists could soon recieve Penalty points if their vehicles tyres are defective or non-roadworthy.
The new penalty will come into effect after a latest report, found that a vehicles defective tyres was one of the biggest causes of fatal accidents in recent years. The latest statistics has prompted the Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe to make the offence of driving with defective tyres punishable with penalty points, or by fixed charges.
Mr Donohoe said: “To highlight how critical this is to our safety on the roads, work is currently on-going to bring the offence of defective and non-roadworthy tyres within the penalty point system. I would urge people to take preventative measures by checking their vehicles regularly and ensure they are roadworthy.”
