The HSE have said the current flu outbreak which has plagued the nations emergency departments has yet to reach it’s peak.
According to the national director for health protection Kevin Kelleher the current outbreak could last for a further two months or longer.
The announcement comes after the HSE urged the public not to attend their GP or local emergency department if they experience symptoms of the flu as antibiotics will not help relieve the symptoms.
Instead they are urging people to stay indoors and keep warm, drink plenty of fluids and rest. However they do recommend you visit your local GP if symptoms persist for longer than a week.
Speaking the current outbreak Mr Kelleher: “We anticipate we still have another one to three weeks of (increased numbers with the flu).”
“Then it will start coming down. So you don’t really see a lessening of the impact for six to eights weeks, because people are still getting it.”
