LÉ Niamh arrived in Sicily, Italy with 367 rescued migrants and 25 dead bodies.

The migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea yesterday after the fishing vessel they were travelling on capsized due to overcrowding.

Up to 600 people were crammed onto the vessel by human traffickers. It is believed that too many people rushed to one side of the boat causing it to overturn.

Those rescued are receiving medical and psychological attention.

25 bodies were taken from the water and 200 migrants remain unaccounted for. It is believed they have drowned in the incident.

Over 2000 migrants have been lost at sea this year.

Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, spoke to RTÉ, saying: “These vessels are very old. The holes which would have previously held fish boxes had people crammed into them. It was a very difficult operation. It was a scene that will scar people for some time”.
