After major backlash, Govt insists there’ll be enough spaces for all school children

According to Minister of Education Norma Foley, the Department of Education “will do all that is necessary to ensure” secondary school spots are accessible to pupils graduating from primary school, reports RTE.

It comes after tidings that parents in Co Kildare claim things have reached a breaking point, with kids on waiting lists for nearby schools or facing the possibility of long trips.

It’s a very vast system we manage, Ms. Foley added, adding that she does not undervalue the stress and difficulties parents and families suffer while trying to find safe locations to live.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Colm Ó Mongáin, she said: “Within Kildare, we can point to availability of school places in first year… at the end of the day, parents do have parental choice. They can decide where they want their child to attend school or where they might not want their child to attend school. But I can with certainty say that there is availability of places in the Kildare area,” reports RTE.
