Justice Minister Helen McEntee has confirmed that almost 33,000 criminal incidents were committed by individuals who were out on bail last year, reports The Mirror.
This accounts for 13% of all criminal incidents recorded on the Garda PULSE system until December 10, 2023.
Minister McEntee responded to a parliamentary question from Bernard Durkan, her Fine Gael colleague.
She explained that although the State’s bail laws allow for bail to be refused in certain cases, judges are “independent in the exercise of their judicial functions and the decision to grant bail in a particular case is solely a matter for the judge concerned based on the available facts”, reports The Mirror.
In total, there were 257,632 criminal offences recorded, and these were related to 20,102 offenders.
Out of these, 32,791 incidents were committed by at least one person who was out on bail, reports The Mirror.
