Ambassador subjected to ‘unacceptable’ treatment by Israel, says Martin

The Tánaiste has stated that Israel’s censure of Ireland’s envoy was “totally unacceptable”, reports RTE.

Following Ambassador Sonya McGuinness’s summons to the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry and rebuke about Ireland’s decision to acknowledge the state of Palestine, Micheál Martin issued the statement.

She was shown a never-before-seen footage of female army conscripts being held hostage by Hamas on October 7, of last year. There were also media representatives there, reports RTE.

According to Mr. Martin, it was inappropriate to consider having ambassadors who had seen the film subjected to media scrutiny.

He promised to speak with Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Israel Katz about the matter.

Mr Martin said: “I find that totally unacceptable and no way to treat diplomats, and is outside the norm by which diplomats are treated in any country,” reports RTE.
