Italian prosecutors have shut down a police station as seven Carabinieri officers are charged with drug trafficking, corruption and even torture.
The scandal of massive police abuse has shaken the northern city of Piacenza, which had one of the highest death rates in the country during the Covid-19
pandemic. Even during the strict lockdown, it is alleged that officers kept local dealers supplied with drugs.
The arrests and station shut down follow a six month investigation into the police officers’ ‘shocking crimes’. Chief Prosectutor Grazia Pradella told press that ‘nothing going on in those barracks was legal’.
