A bill passed by the Oklahoma state legislature bans abortions from the moment of conception, with some exceptions, the strictest ban to date in the United States.
Oklahoma’s action follows steps taken in other Republican-led states to restrict abortions in anticipation of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision allowing abortion nationwide.
The bill now heads to Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, who is expected to sign it – at which point it would immediately go into effect.
Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the new law in a tweet, saying it is “the latest in a series of blatant attacks on women by extremist legislators”.
Meanwhile Pro Life groups say that the new law will save endless numbers of babies from being aborted.
