Blue singer Lee Ryan receives 12 months suspended sentence for racially abusing airline staff

Blue Star Lee Ryan was given a 12-month suspended prison sentence for common racial assault involving beating and degrading treatment of a cabin crew member, reports RTE.

The 40-year-old singer was “slurring his words and staggering around” after drinking an entire bottle of port before a British Airways flight from Glasgow to London City Airport on July 31 last year.

He previously pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aeroplane, for which he was sentenced to four months in prison to run concurrently.

During the January hearing, it was said that the singer was refused more alcohol on the plane after drinking an entire bottle of port.

After being asked to return to his seat, Ryan commented on the appearance of assistant Leah Gordon before holding his wrist, reports RTE.

Police footage shows Ryan “snarling” and having a conversation after trying to bite Officer Bright as officers tried to arrest him after they arrived at the airport.

After reviewing Ryan’s psychological evaluation and hearing that he has high-functioning autism spectrum disorder, Judge Wood found that he did not pose an ongoing danger to society.

Before the sentencing hearing began Thursday, Ryan paced up and down the waterfront and covered his head with a jacket as he entered the courtroom, reports RTE.
