Boris Johnson and ‘tough guy’ Leo Varadkar talk Brexit in New York but still no deal in sight

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a face off with Leo Varadkar in New York last evening as part of the UN General Assembly.

Before the meeting got underway, Johnson told reporters “we remain cautiously optimistic, but still cautious” about Brexit.

While the Taoiseach, who has been accused by many as trying to act the ‘tough guy’ in these Brexit talks, added: “We are very keen that there be a deal, that the UK should be able to leave the European Union in an orderly fashion.

“That’s in Ireland’s interest, it’s in Britain’s interest too.

“But there are certain guarantees that we expect to be honoured, that there won’t be a hard border between North and South…. that North-South cooperation will continue as envisaged by the Good Friday Agreement, that what was given to us by the British Government back in December 2017.”

Johnson jumped in by saying: “It certainly will.”

Hopes aren’t fading just yet that last minute efforts to strike a deal that would suit all sides could be achieved. It’s a very complex situation given the history of Northern Ireland in particular, but it does appears as though the UK and EU and legimiately trying to work out a solvable solution that will work.
