In what can only be described as an incredible interview, reigning Cork camogie Champion Ashling Thompson spoke candidly about her battle with depression and how she managed to triumphantly get through it all and be a fine example to others facing the same demons.
Ashling, 25 from Cork, said that her troubles started when she was involved in an ordinary car crash in 2012. Subsequent to this, she was unable to play her beloved sport for almost 3 full years.
During that time, she said that she really went into a dark place, including depression which stemmed from the suicides of both her boyfriend and best friend.
She also spoke about not fitting in and not being able to attend counselling sessions that were trying to help her.
However, light at the end of the tunnel came when a new manager took over her club and together they really rallied to get Ashling to where she is today, a fine example to anyone has is going through the dreaded demon that is depression.
Ashling now speaks at schools and shows off the county’s winning Championship trophy.
