A horrific terrorist attack unfolded at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration organised by Chabad of Bondi. Two gunmen opened fire on crowds gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, marking the first night of the Jewish Festival of Lights.
At least 12 people were killed, including Assistant Rabbi Eli Schlanger, with 29 others injured, some critically. One attacker was shot dead at the scene, while the second was apprehended in critical condition. Authorities discovered improvised explosive devices in a nearby vehicle, later neutralized.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident as an “act of evil antisemitism,” declaring it a targeted terrorist attack on the Jewish community. NSW Police confirmed the shooters used long arms, and one was previously known to security services.
Witnesses described chaos as gunshots rang out, with beachgoers fleeing in panic. A bystander heroically disarmed one gunman. The attack has shocked Australia, prompting global condemnation and heightened security for Jewish events worldwide.
