A major murder investigation is underway after well-known UK politician Ann Widdecombe has been found dead in her home.
Ann Widdecombe, the outspoken former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson, has died at the age of 78. Her management announced the news on 10 July 2026, confirming she passed away on 9 July. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Born on 4 October 1947 in Bath, Somerset, Widdecombe served as Conservative MP for Maidstone and The Weald from 1987 to 2010. A prominent figure in John Major’s and William Hague’s governments, she held Home Office roles and acted as Shadow Home Secretary. Known for her strong Christian faith, she championed socially conservative causes, including opposition to abortion and support for tougher law-and-order policies.
After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe joined the Brexit Party in 2019, serving as MEP for South West England. She later aligned with Reform UK, acting as the party’s Immigration and Justice spokesperson until her death. Nigel Farage praised her “decisive role” in securing Brexit.
Widdecombe also enjoyed a second career in television. Her memorable, determined performances on *Strictly Come Dancing* in 2010 won her widespread affection, while appearances on panel shows and *Celebrity Big Brother* showcased her forthright style. She wrote several books on politics and faith.
Tributes have poured in from across the political divide. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch described her as a “formidable politician” guided by faith and values. Reform UK’s Richard Tice called her “utterly fearless,” while others remembered her as a “force of nature” and a woman of unyielding conviction.
Ann Widdecombe will be remembered as one of Britain’s most distinctive and uncompromising public figures — a politician who always spoke her mind and remained true to her principles.
