Japanese authorities are examining the condition of at least two nuclear power plants after a 7.2 tremor struck about 220 miles north of Tokyo.
A very strong earthquake has struck areas of Japan devastated by the tsunami 10 years ago, that saw thousands lose their lives from the disaster.
The earthquake hit the coast close to 220 miles north of Tokyo at 6.26pm local time (9.26am Irish time) and had a magnitude of 7, the USGS reports.
Japan’s Meterological Agency said the quake was 7.2 in magnitude and are concerned further quakes will occur.
