BREAKING: RTE’s ‘The Sunday Game’ presenter Michael Lyster has died aged 71

Michael Lyster, the long-serving presenter of RTÉ’s The Sunday Game, passed away peacefully. Born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, on April 11, 1954, he became a familiar and respected figure in Irish broadcasting for more than three decades.

Lyster anchored *The Sunday Game* from 1984 until his retirement after the 2018 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final. His measured delivery, deep knowledge of Gaelic football and hurling, and steady presence made him a staple for viewers during championship seasons.

Over the years he faced significant health challenges. In 2012 he experienced heart failure, followed by a mini-stroke in 2013. The most serious incident occurred in June 2015 when he suffered a major cardiac arrest at home. His wife Anne administered CPR until emergency services arrived, and medical teams revived him multiple times en route to hospital. He later received a pacemaker and returned to presenting duties, showing determination to continue his work.

After stepping down, Lyster enjoyed retirement with his family, occasionally appearing on radio to discuss his career and interests like music. His contribution to covering Gaelic games left a lasting mark on Irish sport and media. He is survived by his wife Anne and close family.
