A man in his 60s has been arrested in Dublin on suspicion of murdering Annie McCarrick, a 26-yr-old American who vanished over 32 years ago. Detained by Irishtown detectives under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, he can be questioned for up to 24 hours. Gardaà are searching a house in Clondalkin, west Dublin, with technical and forensic examinations of the property and garden underway. The current residents are unrelated to McCarrick or her disappearance.
Originally from New York, McCarrick fell in love with Ireland during a teenage school trip. She studied at St Patrick’s College in Drumcondra and Maynooth in the late 1980s, later attending Stony Brook University in New York. In January 1993, she moved permanently to Ireland, living in Sandymount, Dublin, with two flatmates. She worked as a waitress at the Courtyard Restaurant in Donnybrook and Café Java on Leeson Street.
On March 26, 1993, McCarrick spoke with her flatmates before they left for the weekend. She planned a dinner with friends the next day and her mother’s visit the following week. That morning, she bought groceries at Quinnsworth on Sandymount Road, confirmed by a receipt timestamped 11:02 a.m., her last verified activity. Unpacked shopping bags were later found in her apartment. She was reported missing by a friend on March 28, 1993.
It would appear that today’s developments are extremely significant, with gardai closing off the airspace over the man’s house.
