Celestial show: Northern Lights may be visible from many areas around Ireland over the next few nights

The Aurora Borealis (northern lights) photographed in Sommaroy, Norway

Look skyward tonight, as a huge influx of solar radiation is about to hit Earth. This event is expected to create a particularly dazzling and intense occurrence of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) across the Northern Hemisphere, and may even be visible as far south as Ireland.

The best chance to witness the light show is right after dusk and three to four hours before dawn, assuming the skies are clear, of course.

Auroras are caused by the collision between gas particles in the earth’s upper atmosphere and charged particles from the sun. The energy released can create spectacular light shows.
