Charlie Flanagan: Ireland is morally obliged to offer protection to people who come to our shores without notice

What homeless crisis? The government appear to not even realise that 10,000 Irish homeless people

The Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan was speaking to RTE News when he declared that Ireland “was “morally obliged to offer protection to people who come to our shores without notice”.

Flanagan was responding to protests held by concerned citizens in Achill where migrants were due to be housed.

According to RTE, Flanagan believes that there’s a small group of people “whipping up anti-immigrant sentiment”, which he claims was not the view of the Irish people.

But many find it distasteful how Flanagan appears to neglect the fact that there’s an out-of-control homeless crisis in Ireland where 10,000 Irish people are sleeping rough around the country, in shop doorways, park benches and hotel rooms.

He also appears to not realise that locals, where migrants are due to be housed, have real, legitimate, unheard and worrying concerns about what their village or town’s future may be.
