The Christmas season is almost upon us and in traditional fashion the nations supermarkets and shops have begun selling the ever popular selection box which are filled with all the usual chocolaty treats for us to indulge on over the festive period.

However this year the average Irish and British consumer will have a lot less sweets to enjoy after it was revealed the ever favourite amongst children and adults alike has gotten smaller but for the same price.

According to The Mirror newspaper companies such as Cadburys and McVitie’s have deliberately cut the size of their own selection boxes in order to cut costs whilst still increasing their profits.

In a move which has outraged both consumers here and in the UK, it has been revealed that the Cadbury’s Festive Favourites selection box, has been reduced in weight from 208g to 194g.

Meanwhile the McVitie’s Family Circle biscuits box has decreased in weight from 720g to 670g.

Although both companies have said prices will not increase many consumers feel as though they’re being ripped off given the smaller size of selection boxes on offer.

However in a statements issued to the paper both Cadburys and McVitie’s say the scaling down of boxes are necessary.

Cadburys say although the festive favourites selection box has decreased in size they have defended their decision saying other products across their range will increase in size whilst others will get smaller with a spokesperson for the company saying it was part of the process.

Meanwhile McVitie’s have also defended their decision with a spokesperson for the company saying the continuing rising costs in obtaining ingredients to make their biscuits is one of the major reasons for the size reductions.
