City of New York declares state of emergency following torrential downpours as Storm Ida hits the area




A state of emergency has been declared in New York, following torrential downpours as Storm Ida hit the area.

The subway system has been almost entirely shut down as floodwaters cascaded onto stations across the city.

According to local authorities, over 80mm of rain fell in Central Park in the space of 60 minutes, an all-time record.
