Concerns on social media over true meaning of today’s referendum on marriage

There are increasing concerns on social media about the referendum being put to the people today which includes two proposals covered by one answer.

The first proposal – reducing the waiting time for divorce to two years and the second – which is ostensibly for Ireland to recognise foreign divorces.

However, many have commented that the State already recognises legal foreign divorces, and it has been suggested that the referendum is an underhanded way for the government to recognise marriages and divorces conducted in sharia courts, for example, as happens in the UK.

It has also been suggested that this would mean the government can avoid legal issues surrounding child marriages, which are common amongst Muslims migrants coming to the EU.

Other EU states, particularly Sweden, have had huge legal issues surrounding underage marriages and have been forced to legally recognise incestual and child marriages due to the massive Muslim migration to the country.

Unfortunately the government does not allow for citizens to vote ‘yes’ to one proposal and ‘no’ to another, this coupled with the fact that Irish media has given this referendum little attention has also stoked suspicions.
