Coveney: Nobody wants to introduce lockdown but if NPHET says we have to act then we’ll do that

Foreign Secretary Simon Coveney said it was still possible to avoid a return to lockdown, as the number of Covid-19 cases in Ireland had risen worryingly.

Coveney urged people to follow public health advice but warned that the government will act and will impose further lockdowns if NPHET say they need to.

Coveney said that it’s possible to avoid introducing more restrictions, but we have to monitor the numbers very closely claiming that future lockdowns are not inevitable, but they will require a national effort by everyone.

Ireland is experiencing a fourth wave of pandemic, raising concerns about the health system’s ability to cope.

As of Sunday, 4,181 more cases of Covid-19 had been confirmed in the country.

There were 668 patients hospitalized with the disease, 125 of them in intensive care.

Coveney declined to point to the specific sectors that could bear the brunt of the new restrictions, but promised government support for all affected industries.
